Visit an Austin Farmers Market
Some kids sleep in during the summer, but some keep their schedules the same, getting up early no matter the day. Take advantage of your early risers — and support our hardworking farmers at the same time. Here are all the farmers markets in our area and when and where they are open.
As concerns over food quality and safety rise across the country, people are increasingly embracing open-air markets like the Austin Farmers’ Market. Austin residents can tell you, though; the Austin Farmers’ Market is as unique as the city itself. Whether you are a longtime resident, just passing through, or looking for homes in Austin, Texas, for sale, you should know about this special endeavor by Austin’s Sustainable Food Center.
Operational since 2003, the Austin Farmers’ Market seeks to create opportunities for people to make healthy food choices and to participate in a vibrant, local food system. It was founded by farmers, vendors, business people, community leaders, and consumers, using a feasibility study grant from the city of Austin, and has met with overwhelmingly positive response ever since.
According to the market’s website, the goals of the Austin Farmers’ Market are threefold:
- To increase the economic vitality of local farms and small businesses.
- To increase awareness, knowledge, and action among the Central Texas population about how to positively impact the area’s food system and their own health.
- To create vibrant economically and socially diverse city-centered gathering places.
To accomplish these goals, the Austin Farmers’ Market operates in several locations. Downtown, the market operates year round, on Saturdays (9am–1pm) at Republic Square Park. The Sunset Valley Market has the same hours, but operates at the Toney Burger Center, next door to the Sunset Artisan Market. The Triangle location is at Triangle Park on Wednesdays (4–8pm, March through September, and 3–7 pm, October through February). The new East Market is open Tuesdays (10am–1pm) at the YMCA East Communities Branch, located at 5315 Ed Bluestein. All of these markets are open, rain or shine.
If you are ready to be a part of all that Austin has to offer, from concerts to fine dining to the Austin Farmers’ Market, consider living in Belterra.
