Best Ways to Stay Cool When You’re Pregnant During the Summer

Pregnant in the Austin Heat?

Let’s chat about being pregnant in Texas–because I’ve done it twice.

Down here, we only have a small respite from the hot weather during December, January, and a small bit of February. My daughter was born in late February, so luckily, I was enjoying cooler months during my last trimester. The first time? I wasn’t so lucky. My son was born at the end of November, and if you’ve visited Florida in September, you know that is quite possibly the worst month of the year. Add the heat and humidity to the normal uncomfortableness of pregnancy, and what to you get? A ridiculously grumpy–and hot–pregnant woman.

We’re in the midst of hot summer weather, and if you’re pregnant, it can be difficult to stay cool. Here are six fun ideas for keeping you cool during the hot summer months.

Personal Mister

Stay cool wherever you go with your own personal fan, and kick it up a notch with cool water! This misting personal fan is the perfect way to cool down when you’re pregnant, especially if you’re out and about when it’s hot. This fan is battery powered, and has a leak-proof base that can be filled with water and ice. If someone looks at you funny, just point to your belly and say, “Baking a baby over here.” They will understand.

Chill-Its Cooling Towel

The Chill-Its cooling towel is a bit of magic in fabric form. You simply dampen the towel under running water for one minute, snap it, and it becomes cooler than the air around you by at least 15 degrees. The Chill-It can be re-activated again and again and is machine washable. We have one, and I used it often during my two pregnancies, but also now when I wear my daughter–it gets kinda hot in there for both of us.

Foods to Keep Cool

Cool your body from the inside out and fill up your constantly empty stomach with some warm-weather food staples. Watermelon was always one of my favorites, and it gave me a little extra water in addition to a sweet treat. Frozen grapes were another favorite for me. Foods that are high in water content like cucumbers, honeydew melon, and radishes can also help cool you.

Snow Cone Machine

Turn your home into a snow cone stand with the Hamilton Beach Snow Cone Machine. Sweet, ice-cold, and a great way to pretend you’re at the beach, without the heat and humidity and sand in your crevices. This machine uses ice from your freezer and quickly shaves it for a quick treat. The parts are easily removable and machine washable, and the machine comes with a booklet of fun recipes to last all summer.

Mint Water

Wouldn’t a tasty mojito or a mint julep tastes great during a hot summer night using an insulated cup right? Yep, but you’re pregnant, so it’s a no-go for you. Mint can still be a great way to cool you down by infusing your water with it. Fill up a gallon pitcher with water and a few sprigs of mint, then place it in your fridge for two to four hours. You’ll have a yummy drink that’s pregnancy-appropriate, and it may help you get more H2O.
