Heel Pain Relief

Patients often say, “Doc, that first step out of bed and that first step after rest, my heel kills me. I can barely walk until it eases up a few steps later”. Yes, whether you are a runner or sedentary; whether you have gained weight, been pregnant or have a form of systemic arthritis, the complaints sound the same. The big difference is the actual cause. Cause will determine the treatment. With the use of different forms of diagnostic radiography, including Ultrasound, MRI, CT or traditional radiographs, we can determine the cause. From time to time blood tests are necessary to confirm a diagnosis. All patients leave our office feeling better with one visit, but our goal is to make sure that the pain doesn’t return. Orthotics, pain medications, shock wave therapy, injections of cortisone or stem cells or the Hyprocure Stent to control the poor alignment of your feet.We have answers to your heel pain!

Running with Heel Pain: The Terrible Truth is: It Doesn’t Have to be Terrible:

Many of my heel pain patients are runners, whether it be for fun or sport. Heel pain can be crippling to a runner, but I want my patients to know that heel pain doesn’t have to mean an end to running or jogging. As a Podiatric Surgeon in Beverly Hills I love to see my patients able to enjoy running the way they used to.

You do not have to be a runner to have heel pain. If your heel hurts with the first step after rest or the first step out of bed those are symptoms you have heel pathology. I cannot stress enough that if your heel pain has persisted for several weeks or more, consulting a physician is necessary. We can help!

Here are some ways you can make your jogging or running with heel pain a more enjoyable experience:

  1. Stretch before you begin
    This may seem like a no-brainer, but stretching truly is the key to releasing tension in the plantar fascia that can result in heel pain. For many of my patients running and other activities ease their heel pain. Sometimes all it takes is getting started, and the kinks will iron themselves out. Again, if this is not the case and your pain has persisted for more than a few weeks, a visit to the doctor should be your next step.
  2. Stretch AFTER your workout
    It’s no surprise that you should stretch before a run, but did you know stretching after is important as well? Allowing your muscles and ligaments to return to a resting state slowly through stretching can help you avoid cramping in and around your heel. Perform the same stretches before and after a run to see if post-run pain is reduced.
  3. Ice is a runner’s best friend
    Icing for 20 minutes at a time can reduce inflammation and dull any residual pain after heavy exercise.
  4. 4. Allow yourself time to heal and rest
    You may be used to running multiple times a week, but if your heel pain is persistent or is becoming intolerable, cutting down the number of days or the duration of your run might be necessary.
